So you’re looking to perform?
Bedlam Theatre is a 90-seat black-box performance space in a converted church, situated in the heart of Edinburgh on Bristo Place. We are proud to have been home to a number of award-winning shows, and in 2019 we were delighted to be awarded the ‘Most Accessible Small Venue’ by Euan’s Guide.
At Bedlam we do because we love what we do. For this reason, we operate on a box office split between each show and us, with no deposit and no minimum sales threshold. We realise how expensive the Fringe can be, and we don’t want financial reasons to prevent world-class theatre from being presented. Shows are responsible for registration fees with EdFringe, but otherwise there are no upfront costs.
Because we operate as a theatre outside of Fringe – as home to the Edinburgh University Theatre Company – we are fortunate to have a wide range of technical equipment and theatre infrastructure (and access to some very talented people). In fact, last year we celebrated our 40thAnniversary as a theatre – you could say we’re an old hand.
The safety of our performers, staff and audiences remain our number one priority and informs every aspect of our planning. In light of the Covid-19 pandemic there are a number of additional risks we must address, and we are actively looking into a number of reasonable scenarios in which we could open in a Covid-secure manner. However, legislation surrounding social distancing and lockdown changes so quickly and it’s impossible to plan anything with absolute certainty.
However, we are making some provisional arrangements for the day we are allowed to open, and are accepting ‘expressions of interest’ from potential performers. We hope that this will be in 2021, and so (with a cautious optimism) we want to hear from you.
